My thesis addressed the biogeography of forest birds on the islands of Gatun Lake, Panama. The key findings were that both area and isolation have strong influences on species distributions. Through a series of over-water release experiments I learned that several understory species do not fly even 50 m across water and that such poor abilities to fly across water correlates extremely well with the distributions of those species across the Gatun archipelago.

I am now studying the ecology of Streaked Horned Lark, an endemic subspecies of the Pacific Northwest.

B.S., M.S., Université de Montréal, Canada
Ph.D. candidate, Université Laval, Quebec City, Canada, 2007

My work was in Panama on the biogeography of forest-dwelling birds in the Panama Canal area. I mapped the species distributions of all forest dwelling birds across 32 regions stretching from Panama City on the Pacific Coast to Colon on the Caribbean Coast. Across this area is a steep rainfall gradient, which is associated with strong changes in bird species richness. I modeled the most important correlates of bird distributions, as well as correlates of human distribution patterns. My aim was to predict future scenarios of forest bird diversity loss as human populations in the region increase and forests are converted to other habitats. I was co-advised by Douglas Robinson and Dr. André Desrochers at Université Laval.  I am now a postdoc at U Laval and Oregon State University.
